March 2008 Newsletter

Hi Earthsaver,

The Earthsave Baltimore nonprofit has some really exciting events coming up soon. The next two events will include major, internationally known speakers.

Sure hope you can attend our big, annual Earth-friendly Food Choices special lecture event on April 12th from 5:30 - 9:00. This one is not a potluck, though light refreshments will be provided. And it won’t be at our usual location, but will be in a much larger room in Catonsville.

The keynote speaker, Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD, of the Cleveland Clinic, who designed and set up an amazing, ongoing clinical program, in 1985, to treat 24 patients with coronary artery heart disease so severe that they were considered untreatable by conventional western medicine. Several of them had been given less than a year to live by their referring cardiologist.

By the end of the first year on Dr. Esselstyn’s dietary program, heart disease in the vast majority of patients had not only stopped its progression, but had actually begun to reverse. In fact, all compliant patients in the program are still alive today, twenty one years later! Sure hope you can attend and bring your friends to the April 12th event. Dr. Esselstyn, who is an excellent speaker, will also be available to sign your copy of his new book, Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease.

Local radio show host Brian Sanderoff recently did an excellent interview of Dr. Esselstyn, which you can listen to on the Your Prescription for Health website. There is also an article by Dr. Esselstyn, on page 17, in the current issue of Purpose Woman magazine, which is available for free in all local public libraries.

The next Veg Dinner Lecture Series event is set for May 17th in Owings Mills, and will feature one of the most popular speakers we have had, Milton Mills, MD, who will speak on “The Natural Diet of Humans: The Impact of Meat on the Human Body.” We expect a large turnout for that one so advance registration is required.

That’s all for now. Hope to see you soon!

Peace, Don Robertson

3rd ANNUAL EARTH-FRIENDLY FOOD CHOICES lecture event (not a potluck) will happen on Saturday April 12th, 5:30-9:00 pm, and will be located at the Women’s Club of Catonsville, 10 St. Timothy's Lane, at Frederick Rd. The keynote speaker will be the world renowned Cleveland Clinic physician and nutritional researcher Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., who will speak on “Arrest and Reversal: Abolishing Heart Disease.”

Dr. Esselstyn began a clinical research study, in 1985, using plant-based nutrition with no added oil in patients severely ill with coronary artery disease. All compliant patients halted and often reversed their disease. They also lost their obesity, diabetes & hypertension. Several patients had been told by their referring cardiologist that they had less than a year to live. All are alive 21 years later!

This special event, starting at 5:30 pm, will include the lecture “A Menu of Love: The Vegetarian Lifestyle”, by Don Robertson, founding director of Earthsave Baltimore. Light refreshments will be included. Men are very welcome to attend!! Seating is limited, advance registration suggested!! Tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at-the-door. YOUR PRESCRIPTION FOR HEALTH RADIO SHOW, which is hosted by holistic pharmacist Brian Sanderoff, featured an interview of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn on Sunday, March 16th in the second hour of the program, which runs every Sunday from 10-noon on WCBM, 680 AM. You may listen to that very informative interview by going to http://www.illnessisoptional.com/cms/radio-show-archive/index.php.

EARTHSAVE VEG DINNER SERIES, on Saturday, May. 17th from 6-9 pm, will host a potluck dinner featuring the lecture “The Natural Diet of Humans: The Impact of Meat on the Human Body,” by Milton Mills MD.

Dr. Mills serves as associate director of preventive medicine for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a North American group of doctors and laypersons dedicated to promoting better nutrition and higher research standards. As an African-American physician focusing on preventive medicine, Dr. Mills has delved into some of the environmental and societal influences affecting health. MONTHLY VEG MEETUP DISCUSSION GROUPS offer us a chance to gather in more intimate and less formal settings than does the monthly Earthsave potluck dinner/lecture series. Meetups are casual and are held in restaurants over great vegetarian food. Discussions include a variety of topics that support people in making healthier choices in diet and lifestyle. There are two different groups, one vegan and one vegetarian. Both groups welcome anyone who is interested in learning about healthier eating. For details, or to register and let others know you plan to attend, go to http://vegetarian.meetup.com/9/, or to http://vegan.meetup.com/29/.
Discussions will continue on the topic of how we tend to answer some of the tougher questions that often come up about our lifestyle. Let’s talk about it!

NEW EARTHSAVE PROMOTIONAL LEAFLET: We have a new, and very attractive, four-page leaflet that not only gives Earthsave event information, but includes some great quotes and information about the powerful ways in which our food choices affect our health, the environment, and animals who are raised for food. Please let us know if you would like to help us spread the word.

BALTIMORE ANIMAL RIGHTS COALITION (BARC) has set an impressive agenda for outreach tabling and other events in the next couple of months. They do a great job educating folks about the treatment of animals who are caught in our modern, intensive confinement, industrialized food system. They have made great strides in convincing several Baltimore area restaurants to remove foie gras, a “delicacy” that’s produced by force-feeding ducks and geese, from their menus. To find out how you can help, contact Erin and Bob at info@BaltimoreAnimalRights.com. And visit http://baltimoreanimalrights.com/.

EARTHSAVE MEMBERSHIP is a great way for you to contribute to our important educational mission. All members may receive a free 12-issue subscription to Vegetarian Times magazine and Earthsave’s national quarterly newsletter. Folks who attend meetings may check out books from our well stocked EarthSave Library, they may place literature on our networking tables, may make a brief announcement to the group, and receive discounted attendance fees and EarthSave bookstore prices. You may join our group online at http://www.earthsave.org/, or you can send a tax-deductible check for $35, or $50 for family membership, or $25 for student or senior, to EarthSave at 517 Talbott Ave. Lutherville MD, 21093. Thanks for your kind support!

PLEASE REMEMBER to be the peace that you wish to manifest. Be well!
