Sept. 27th, 6-8 pm, vegan potluck, in Towson, and live presentation by Mark Rifkin, RD, on "Healthy Fats, Healthy Hearts: A Review of the Evidence". In Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's best selling book "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease", the author states that liquid oils and high-fat whole plant foods, such as nuts and seeds, should be avoided by anyone with heart disease or looking to prevent it. Many whole-food advocates are passionate about his guidelines, and are recommending them to others. But is the picture Dr. Esselstyn drew as simple as that? Do all these foods present risks for heart health? Dietitian Mark Rifkin will review the roles of fat in general and heart health, discuss the author's evidence and how the heart-healthy picture is a bit more complex than has been suggested.

Mark Rifkin is a Registered Dietitian and long term vegan who focuses on whole food, plant-based nutrition for prevention and treatment of chronic illness. Mark enjoys educating and supporting vegetarians, vegans, and all those who would like to eat for optimal nutrition.

DINNER GUESTS may choose to either bring a dish made without animal products (to serve 8) plus $5 (members pay just $2) donation; pay $15 (members pay just $12) to enjoy dinner and presentation; or pay $5 for presentation only. We eat first, then make announcements, vote and present awards for our favorite dishes, and then show presentation. Let us know in advance, if possible, if you plan to pay for dinner rather than bring a dish.
